7th Annual Alamo Classic
OD39 Regatta
March 22, 2003
WOODLAWN
LAKE, SAN ANTONIO, TX
With threatening skies during the set-up portion of the regatta with Pahl, Carl, Juan, Tony, and myself, we all had thoughts of canceling and trying for Sunday. But after seeing the weather radar just before I left for the lake I was hoping for the clearing to start about noon. Well by 11:00 AM we had blue skies, plenty of sun and wind, and folks were beginning to arrive, ready to race. It was great to see some of the old timers that we haven't seen in a while, like John Oliveira and Juan Alvarado back in the water. Bob Taylor of Lake Canyon Yacht Club, and our annual Principle Race Officer for the event was ready to go by noon and it looked like we had dodged a bullet on the weather and we would have a perfect regatta after all. The group was divided into Gold and Silver Fleet with the Gold running 3 back to back races and then the Silver. After 6 races each fleet it was time for lunch served up by out New Member and now new BBQ cook Joe Penaloza, with his very own pork and deer sausage to go with Mama Seta's Fajita's with all the fixens.
After lunch it was back to racing with another 6 races ran for each fleet before the skies turned dark again from the North. By 5:30pm we had 12 races for each fleet and it looked like the skies were about to open up again. So it was time to call it a day and figure scores. What an end to a perfect day of racing when you can have your trophy presentation indoors in the clubhouse with the rain outside and no one in a hurry to leave.
Dell Perena form the Austin Club was gracious enough and play photographer with his unbelievable digital equipment for still photos. You may have seen some of his work already on our site for the Star 45 Nationals. Stay tuned for another show by Del on our site of this event. He shot over 100 shots and will get to Eric for web page showing very soon.
