9th Annual Alamo Classic OD39 Regatta:

What a beautiful day at the lake this past Saturday(Apr.9th) for the OD Regatta.  We couldn't ask for anymore wind. Blowing 10-15 and building all day gave us something to smile about.  Especially after the dreary wet winter with no winds we've had the past few months.  As usual with our veteran OD guys, registration went quick and easy with everyone keeping with tradition in bringing a 12 pack with their registration fee.  As usual our own Mark Setting Pro John Oliveira was right on the mark (no pun intended) for the morning set-up.  Even our Treasurer Mike Minerva shows up for the money part.  We can always count on him showing up when there's money and food involved!  With newcomers Ray Mireles, and Larry Ludwig, it filled out our Silver Fleet and gave our own Mando some competition.  Gold Fleet was filled with the usual cast of characters from our own club with the competition and mark roundings quite loaded at times.  The competition was so tight that if you look at the results below you'll notice that everyone in Gold Fleet had a 1st in at least one race.  With 5 races done before lunch, you can tell this was not going to be the drifting regatta of years past.  Yes the winds were steadily picking up and the lunch break was welcomed to do repairs for the afternoon.  As we always have it, Mama Seta & Charlotte/Paul Kahl always put out the food spread with traditional cook of Rick Phillips and Tony Seta manning the BBQ pit.  After all these years of these two have the timing down perfect for us to just walk up from the dock and dive into all the Fajita and fixens we could eat.  Back to racing till 5 PM.  And yes the winds built to a steady 12-15 and even whitecaps breaking at times. But the OD's all showed their durability by making through the day with minimum breakdowns. But sailing in heavy winds can be a bit stressful, especially when the Racing Rules apply for the day and penalty circle being spun by all at one time or another.  Trophies once again done by Terry Lindeman and outstanding was the word this year.  With the help of Lea Gregory as our Principle Race Officer(PRO), I think it was clear that if you were over early and she called it, you didn't hear any argument from any of the guys!  She did a great job with the recording the scores. She kept saying that this was learning experience for her also.  Just another great year with the OD39!

And let me just say after so many of these day regattas in the past year, that when it comes to the club's set-up and breakdown, we've all become pros at it and it great to be up and down in less than an hour. So to all members who participate - Thanks & Good Winds of course....Ray Seta
