2006 Victoria National Championship Regatta
Reports from The Woodlawn Racing Team

The Woodlawn Racing Team was back in action June 23, 24 and 25 at the 2006 Victoria National Championship Regatta in Bakersfield, CA!  Updates on the adventures of our sailing hero's are posted below:

Note From The Webmaster: This time out we have posted 22-1/2 minutes worth of audio updates from Ray & JK.  Due to the normal outrageous nature of the beast we have implementing a Cheech & Chong rating system on Ray's Audio to not only protect the innocent but to protect the WSC from the FCC!  I've listed the rating system to be used below:

The Official Cheech & Chong Audio Rating System
PG Parental Guidance - Acceptable To 90% of Families But Never Used.
PG-13 Ray's Commentary When Being Careful... .
R O' Dear - Should I Really Post This???
X I'll Edit & Retype - This Will Never Reach The Light Of Day!!!

Note From the Webmaster: Once again my thanks to fellow Texan and Victoria National Championship Regatta Competitor Charles Sudduth for allowing us to republish one of his terrific updates here on the Woodlawn site.  Charles is a member of The Les Lacs Yacht Club (LLYCA) which is the home of Victoria model yacht sailing in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.  These guys are hard core Victoria sailors and they've done a great job keeping their own Yahoo site populated with the latest news on the 2006 Victoria National Championship Victoria Regatta!!!  You can visit them at this address:   http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LLYC/

Monday, June 26th - Hi All, Here is my final report of the 2006 Victoria National Championship in Bakersfield, CA. Sunday's racing was moved from 10:00 to 11:00 because the weather report forecasted the wind to begin moving late morning or mid-day.

As the sailor's gathered for the last day of the regatta, one of the sailors showed up with a different set of sails on his Victoria than what was on the boat on Saturday. Craig Mackey noticed that and after much discussion protested the person because over the years, it has been generally accepted that the Victoria would only have one suite of sails for a National championship regatta. Of course Craig could not use that as an argument, so he protested because the sails were not measured prior to the skippers meeting on Saturday morning—either Friday or late measuring before the skipper's meeting according to the NOR and the published racing rules. As it turned out after a lengthy protest committee meeting or as is often said in sailing parlance "in the room," Craig ended up winning the protest and the sailor in question had to change back to the sails he used on Saturday. The kicker in this protest committee was that the committee consisted of three Bakersfield sailors and Ray Seta of San Antonio.  Ray argued the protest successfully. The reason it was decided in favor of Craig Mackey was that there is nowhere in the Victoria class rules, the NOR, or the published racing rules for the regatta that stated a sailor could change from one suite of sails to another during the regatta.

We finally started the day's racing sometime around 12:15. The wind was spotty—very light and variable. It was first decided by the Race Director that the racing would begin with a downwind start. A lot of disagreement was heard about this decision. Brian Roberts as Class Secretary stepped in and nixed this decision almost immediately. So we went back to starting to windward. According to the NOR, there were to be 24 races in this regatta. We sailed 15 on Saturday leaving us with 9 more to sail on Sunday. All races were sailed in sets of three followed by a break. The regatta was to end at three o'clock.  This would not give us time to sail the nine races with breaks plus lunch break. Lunch break was shortened to about 45 minutes. Then everyone was asked if they wanted to sail until we finished all 24 races or end the regatta at three o'clock. Everyone except one indicated that they wanted to sail until all 24 races had been completed. The one person did not say his opposition to completing the 24 races loud enough to be heard by the Race Director so it was decided that we sail until the 24 race regatta was completed.

Other than Chris Staiger's boat, the boats that were generally up front in Saturday's racing were sometimes back a little further while other boats that were nearer the middle of the pack yesterday were sometimes up front. I heard Geoff Becker say that he did not win any races today and the last race he came in 21st. I believe I usually do better in lighter winds and occasionally I was up in the front half during a race but due to a mistake I ended up in the back half. The winds stayed up and down—light and variable—for the remainder of the regatta.

Did I mention it was hot? The temperature was over 100 again today but I think were saved a little because of the sometimes overcast skies. With less wind it seemed hotter. Since I do not have the final results in front of me, I suggest that you go to the VictoriaYC Yahoo Group site for the final results. I do know that Chris Staiger was 1st, Geoff Becker 2nd, Craig Mackey 4th, and Peter Seik 5th. Yours truly sailed a poor regatta and was lucky to finish 14th after today's racing. I was 13th after Saturday's racing.  That wraps up the 2006 Victoria National Championship Regatta reporting.

Hope to see you in August, possibly only for a short time.
Charles Sudduth

10:19PM, PST, Saturday, June 24th - Team Texas Update Courtesy of Charles Sudduth - Hi All, Friday: When I got to the pond at about 11;00 AM, Several of the guys were there == Craig Mackey, Brian Roberts, Tom Causin--to name a few.    Buoys were out. The course was a long windward/leeward. The pond runs just about north/south. The winds are predominately from the NNW.  Friday's winds were from the NNW at 5-10 with gusts to 15 at least.  The sailing was great and there are no weeds. There is a blueish dye in the water that keeps the algae/weeds from growing. We can see our keels and rudders and they have a blue tint. We checked in and got our boats measured. My new Vic weight 4 lbs 5.5 oz on their scales so I had to put in 2 batteries and 3 quarters to bring it up to 4 pounds 8 oz. After sailing most of the afternoon, we all gathered at Chris Staiger's home for a reception--food and beverages were terrific.  The drawing for donated items was completed after eating and socializing. We had a group picture taken out in the back yard.

Saturday: Action began early with continued Check in and measuring for late arrivals, individual pictures were taken, more practice sailing and finally the skipper's meeting about 10:45. First race began about 11:00 AM. The plan was to race three races, take a 10-minute break, race three races, take a 10-minute break, etc. We got in two sets of races in before lunch at 1:00 PM. Racing continued until about 5:00 PM getting in another 3 sets of races making 15 races for the day. All the races were 1 1/2 laps with a down wind finish. The wind was light (maybe 3-5 with occasional gusts of up to 10 mph.) During the breaks the wind usually was pretty good. It was very hot. I heard it was about 103 or 104 degrees. As they say out here, "It is a dry heat." Well, anything over 100 is HOT--dry or not. I had my camel and was drinking water all day also finished off a large bottle of Gatorade.

Geoff Becker is leading the pack. Craig Mackey was 5th at lunch and finished the day in 4th. JK is the highest placing Texan, then Chris Macaluso from Houston, then me (13th) followed by Ray Seta in 14th place. Tomorrow is supposed to be hotter and we are not starting until 11:00 AM because the wind is not supposed to be moving until then.  I will give another report tomorrow after the regatta is over. Check out the Woodlawn Website for live recordings of Ray Seta's reports.  It is pretty neat. He calls it in and within seconds it is on their website.

Until tomorrow, have a great regatta.
Charles

Take a moment to look at the score sheet.  Places 4 - 6th are close with just 2 points separating each place. Then there is 13-15 with just 1 point in between. This will be fun to watch to see how it all plays out. Who can keep their cool, (it is HOT out there) and not let  anyone sneak past them or who is able to get a place or two up on the competition.  Watch the site tonight to get all of the updates!.... Well, the guys were successful in getting free from jail after more than a few of their pesos were handed over to local authorities.   JK swears that the Donkey Show was worth it though...lol..!!!   They are now back across the border driving around in a rented 93 Year Model White Ford Bronco in LA traffic.

This morning Les Lac spies reported spotting the two at Knott's Berry Farm, gripping each other in terror as they dropped or should I say plummeted from the Ghost Rider Coaster.  Then reports placed them at the Huff and Puff ride trying to build up their puny little muscles with some endurance training for the weekend.

I just received word from a very reliable source that the next stop on their journey is to the land of Walt Disney Productions as they get the grand tour and get to meet up with the "REAL" CAPT. JACK SPARROW!   I am sure that they will exchange stories of their pillaging and get suggestions on their plan of attack for Nats.......Anonymous Clearpoint Reporter...

5PM, PST, Wednesday, June 21st - Ray and JK were in a Tijuana jail cell today and there's no audio update because they blew their one phone call trying to reach Papa Seta who I understand just laughed and said "I told you so"!!!  From what I've heard a jail break was impossible.  Fortunately, JK was able to have pirate gold (bribes) wired directly to the local officials private accounts. The dynamic duo was in a lot of trouble and I understand it took a small fortune to get them out!   Thankfully, JK's ruthless pirating has made him exceptionally wealthy.  I just hope he didn't use any of the Alamo Classic gold coins.....he and the rest of the Alamo Classic Victoria Regatta (ACVR) participants will need them this Fall in San Antonio to lift the Aztec curse placed upon them at last years ACVR close... 5PM, PST, Tuesday, June 20th - OK Dudes...the Pirate Ship has safely landed at LAX and Cheech and Chong are on the rampage, pillaging and plundering the town!!!!!!!  Lock up your women and hide under your beds….NO PLACE in California is safe now that the Pirates have invaded!!!!!!! We patiently await Capt. Jack's second official audio update....Red-Beard The Pirate

1st official report: Monday PM - "Just been informed by tech master Red-Beard that the WSC Website is now going even more into the future.  No more will Red-Beard be listening to my un-edited version of highlights and complaints over a voice mail.   I counted on this because I knew he would always clean it up for me for print and the best thing is that I wouldn't have to hit spell check.  We are now going to use voice mail hyper-link-instant-babbling audio version of my official reports right from the phone.   I think Eric is trying to punish me into speaking more eloquently and articulate.....is this possible from a Pirate?.....argh!!!!!!  This weeks events will bring another 1st for WSC's Pirate website with this new "just click to hear" thing Eric has set up.  We'll see....I guarantee if I can't restrain myself on the first call I will be calling the old stand-by phone number of his and giving him the UN-edited reality version of my update.  Especially if we're in jail somewhere South of the border because JK  just had to see the Donkey Girl doing the Banana trick before we get our new bootleg sails from Tijuana.  Pirates leave tomorrow AM.......let the vacation begin and Don't Mess with the Pirates of Woodlawn!  Capt. Jack"
